The Category 4 hurricane was responsible for approximately 8,000 deaths, making it the deadliest natural disaster to strike the United States to date (in comparison, 1,800 people died as a result of Hurricane Katrina). After striking Galveston, the storm blew northward to the Great Lakes, then headed eastward back just north of Halifax, Nova Scotia, before disappearing into the Atlantic Ocean.
