In medicine, an adverse effect is a harmful and undesired effect resulting from a medication or other intervention such as surgery. An adverse effect may be termed a "side effect", when judged to be secondary to a main or therapeutic effect, and may result from an unsuitable or incorrect dosage or procedure, which could be due to medical error. Adverse effects are sometimes referred to as "iatrogenic" because they are generated by a physician/treatment. Some adverse effects only occur only when starting, increasing or discontinuing a treatment. Using a drug or other medical intervention which is contraindicated may increase the risk of adverse effects. Adverse effects may cause medical complications of a disease or procedure and negatively affect its prognosis. They may also lead to non-compliance with a treatment regimen. The harmful outcome is usually indicated by some result such as morbidity, mortality, alteration in body weight, levels of enzymes, loss of function, or as a pathological change detected at the microscopic, macroscopic or physiological level. It may also be indicated by symptoms reported by a patient. Adverse effects may cause a reversible or irreversible change, including an increase or decrease in the susceptibility of the individual to other chemicals, foods, or procedures, such as drug interactions. In clinical trials, a distinction is made between adverse events (AEs) and serious adverse events (SAEs). Generally, any event which causes death, permanent damage, birth defects, or requires hospitalization is considered an SAE. The results of these trials are often included in the labeling of the medication to provide information both for patients and the prescribing physicians. From Wikipedia under the

Q. My Psychiatrist prescribes Mirtaz 15( Mirtazapine) for my mother for Depression.1 tab. a day.She is 72 years old, having hypertension(controlled after taking medicine) and non Diabetic. Is there any adverse effect of the medicine? Asked by dhrubaaa - Fri Oct 24 12:42:54 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. When I took Mirtazapine, 60 mg, the good effect it had was to help me fall asleep at night. If your mom is having problems sleeping, this could be a "Good" effect. I didn't notice any bad effects Mirtazapine had because I went to sleep after I took it. I hope your mom will be feeling better. Best Wishes. Answered by Hopefully Helpful - Fri Oct 24 13:10:48 2008 Prescription Medications (Psych Medicine)-- Does it effect anesthesia? Q. Ok, please don't answer unless you actually know. I regularly take three medications, I have oral surgery coming up this week where I will receive general anesthesia. I take Provigil (for alertness - stimulant) Attivan (for anxiety - benzo) and daily Lamictal (Beta- Blocker). Are any of these medications known to have an adverse effect on anesthesia? Asked by anon386 - Sat Feb 3 15:29:50 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. As a pharmacist,I can give u some general informations: 1-as u r taking provigil(CNS stimualtor),then the dose of general anaesthetic to be given would be higher than individuals not taking any CNS stimulants. 2-General anaesthetic will potentiate the effect of Attivan, thus you must consult your doctor, and ask him wether to stop attivan or reduce the daily dose. 3-B-blocker has no known interactions with general anaeshesia. This is just little information,I hope u find my answer benificial. Answered by diesel992 - Sat Feb 3 15:55:21 2007 How good are statins in reducing chlorestrol?

I think you must be mixed up total cholesterol should be less than 5 and we rarely see one in double figures let alone triple, simvastatin 40mg is proved to reduce cholesterol however whatever you are taking please have a liver function test 4 weeks after starting them and at least once a year afterwards You need to take this alongside your other meds and possibly reduce your salt and caffeine intake to lower your bp Answered by Wiz - Mon May 7 13:34:37 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Adverse effect (medicine)" |
